The Senate impeachment trial of former United States President Donald Trump, who stands accused of “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, continues to drive a wedge within the Republican Party.
Ten Republicans in the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump on January 13, a week after pro-Trump rioters breached the US Capitol as Congress met to certify President Joe Biden’s election victory.
Republicans who voted for impeachment included Representative Liz Cheney, the chairwoman of the Republican conference, who has since faced a push from within the party to remove her from her leadership post.

“They hated him so much, they checked their objectivity,” Kelly told Kay in interview footage that aired Saturday and was shared in part by the U.K.’s Daily Mail. “It wasn’t just CNN, all of them did. They just couldn t check their own personal feelings about him.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) outlined three “essential items” that Senate Democrats are prioritizing moving forward, one of which is the second impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump.
“We have three essential items on our plate: Confirming President [Joe] Biden’s cabinet and key officials. Providing desperately needed COVID [Chinese coronavirus] relief. The second impeachment trial of Donald Trump,” Schumer outlined on Friday, promising that the Senate will “do all three”:
