Rob Portman of Ohio on Monday announced he won’t run for re-election when his six-year term expires in 2022. He released a statement that cited partisan gridlock as a major factor in his decision. “We live in an increasingly polarized country where members of both parties are being pushed further to the right and further to the left, and that means too few people who are actively looking to find common ground,” Portman’s statement said. “This is not a new phenomenon, of course, but a problem that has gotten worse over the past few decades.

Orthodox Union praises Biden s Homeland Security chief nomination in rare move

Follow Jan. 18, 2021 WASHINGTON – The Orthodox Union on Monday publicly lauded Homeland Security Secretary-designate Alejandro Mayorkas one day before his confirmation hearing. This is an unusual move from the organization, which very rarely comments on nominees before confirmation processes. In a letter written to Senators Gary Peters and Rob Portman – the bipartisan ranking members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security – as well as committee s other members, the OU Advocacy Center cited Mayorkas previous experience in protecting Jewish institutions amid the dramatic rise in antisemitic attacks in his role as deputy secretary of homeland security from 2014 to 2016. Based on our past experience with him, we are confident that, if confirmed to be secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas will lead this aspect of the department’s work effectively and for the welfare of the people of the United States of America, Orthodox Union Exec

US Govt News: Impeachment for Inciting Insurrection

Friday, January 15, 2021 mpeachment. Take Two.  On January 13, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald J. Trump on one count of “incitement of insurrection” by a vote of 232–197 (10 Republicans voted to impeach and 4 did not cast votes). He is the first president to have been impeached twice. Because President Trump has only four full days left in office, what happens next is a bit unclear. First, there is some legal debate as to whether the United States Constitution’s impeachment process allows for conviction after a president leaves office. Second, and perhaps more importantly for the  Buzz, because the impeachment trial likely won’t start in the U.S. Senate until sometime next week, it will surely impact President-elect Joseph R. Biden’s agenda, especially during Biden’s crucial first 100 days in office. (The previous presidential impeachment trials lasted 21 days, 37 days, and 83 days, respectively.)
