Hungarian Opinion: Government Rejects Criticism By US Secretary Of State Over Media Freedom

Answering a question by Telex during a virtual international meeting with eight invited journalists, Antony Blinken called
it ‘ironic’ that concerns over press pluralism should emerge after Hungary got rid of Soviet domination.
The US Secretary of State urged the government to promote an open environment and warned that in their efforts to compete with the West, China and Russia ‘undermine the democratic and sovereign will of many countries in the region’. He also remarked that the US wants to improve cooperation with Hungary on economic matters and energy security as well as to support democratic institutions, rule of law and human rights.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has remembered the role of human rights activist Xulhaz Mannan and his fellow advocate Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy for their courageous work on behalf of marginalised communities in Bangladesh. );

“On the anniversary of his death, we stand with Xulhaz’s family and friends and honour his commitment to creating a world in which all can live with dignity,” Blinken said in a statement issued by the US Department of State on Apr 25.
Xulhaz served for nine years as the protocol specialist for the US Embassy in Dhaka before joining USAID Bangladesh’s Office of Democracy and Governance.
