Cruz Reynoso, a son of migrant workers who worked in the fields as a child and went on to become the first Latino state Supreme Court justice in California history, has died.
Reynoso passed away May 7 at an elder care facility in Oroville, according to his son, Len ReidReynoso. The cause of death was unknown. Reynoso was 90.
In a legal career that spanned more than half a century and took him from his first job in El Centro to Sacramento, the soft-spoken family man helped shape and protect the first statewide, federally funded legal aid program in the country and guided young, minority students toward the law.

Some of Chicago’s most influential Black women kicked off Mother’s Day weekend on Friday with a vow to remove barriers made worse by the pandemic in education, health care and economic opportunity holding back the next generation of Black women and girls.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot called it, “the next phase of what I hope is the feminist revolution.”
“Through the pandemic, women have suffered mightily. There are a lot of women who were forced to choose between staying at home, being a home-schooler, child care and their jobs,” Lightfoot told a virtual news conference convened by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill.

The Southern York County School Board made the right decision to retire the district’s Indian warhead logo.
It certainly wasn’t a popular one for many in our community who voiced their preference in a survey to retain the logo. Although 60 percent surveyed also indicated that we should consider Indian perspectives in our decision.
I can tell you that it wasn’t a foregone conclusion for the board. Frankly, I had no idea the motion would pass until we got to roll call.
It took great courage, leadership and reflection by the board to vote in favor of retiring the logo, especially for those members who are alumni of Susquehannock High School and have generational roots in our community.
