The American Rescue Plan sets aside $10.4 billion for agriculture support, with about half of that amount set aside for farmers of color, and allocates extra federal funds to farmers who were “subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice because of their identity as members of a group.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture has faced accusations of racism for decades, but little has been done to address the problem of discrimination in farm loans. Journalist Mabel Norris Reese fought for justice, faced down danger in Lake County

On March 18, the Orange County Regional History Center will honor determined journalist Mabel Norris Reese in an online event. In the 1950s and ’60s, Reese, who covered news in Lake County, courageously opposed segregation and injustice, at peril to her career and her safety. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King tells the story in his 2018 book “Beneath a Ruthless Sun: A True Story of Violence, Race, and Justice Lost and Found,” which brought renewed attention to Reese’s career and importance.
