OECD area employment rate rose by 1.0 percentage point in the fourth quarter of 2020, but remains below pre-pandemic level
15 Apr 2021 – The OECD area employment rate – the share of the working-age population with jobs – rose by 1.0 percentage point in the fourth quarter of 2020, to 66.7%, remaining 1.9 percentage points below the rate observed in the first quarter of 2020. In the same period, the OECD labour force participation rate (i.e. the share of people of working-age who are either employed or unemployed) increased by 0.4 percentage point, to 71.7%, still 0.9 percentage point below its level in the first quarter of 2020.

In the
United
States, where the number of people on temporary
lay-off has been relatively steady since October (see Figure
2), the unemployment rate was stable at 6.7%, 3.2 percentage
points higher than in February 2020. In
Canada, it increased by 0.2 percentage
point (to 8.8%). More recent data for January 2021 show that
the unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percentage point in
the
United States (to 6.3%) while it
continued to rise (by 0.6 percentage point, to 9.4%) in
Canada. In December, the unemployment rate
was unchanged in
Japan, at 2.9% (0.5
percentage point above its pre-pandemic level). It increased
by 0.5 percentage point in
Korea (to 4.6%),
while it continued to decline in

OECD area[1] employment rate – the share of the working-age population with jobs – rose by 1.9 percentage points in the third quarter of 2020, to 66.7%, following a fall of 4.4 percentage points in the second quarter due to COVID‑19 containment measures. The latest rate thus remains 2.5 percentage points below the rate observed in the first quarter of 2020.
