Boy Scouts reach $850M settlement in sexual abuse case

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has reached an $850 million settlement with tens of thousands of people who filed claims of sexual abuse against organization volunteers and leaders, marking the highest payout in a child sexual abuse case in U.S. history.  The settlement, which was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Thursday, comes more than a year after the century-old organization filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid a wave of sexual abuse lawsuits.  More than 84,000 people are part of the law suit that won the settlement, which stems from claims that date back as far as the 1960s of sexual abuse of boys in the organization.

By Jonathan Stempel (Reuters) – The Boy Scouts of America has reached an $850 million settlement with tens of thousands of men with sex abuse claims, a major step toward resolving a flood of litigation that led to bankruptcy for the 111-year-old organization. In a Thursday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, the Boy Scouts said its proposal has support from representatives for about 60,000 abuse survivors and provides a framework for a global resolution of abuse claims. Groups representing abuse victims said in a joint statement that the accord, which requires court approval, “achieves consensus” among large numbers of claimants, as well as the Boy Scouts and more than 250 local councils.

Boy Scouts of America Reaches $850 Million Settlement With Sex Abuse Victims The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) on Thursday reached an $850 million settlement with attorneys representing some 60,000 victims of child sex abuse seeking compensation through the nonprofit’s bankruptcy proceedings. According to a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, insurance rights will be signed over to a trust that would handle the abuse claims and distribution of payments to the tens of thousands of sex abuse victims. The settlement with the Coalition of Abused Scouts for Justice and two other groups “ensures we have the overwhelming support of survivors” to emerge from bankruptcy, the Irving, Texas-based organization said.
