In the past week, Florida has averaged 1,525 adult hospitalizations a day, and 35 daily pediatric hospitalizations. Both are the highest per capita rate in the nation, according to Jason Salemi, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of South Florida.
The hospitalizations and increasing cases have come as the new, more transmittable delta variant has spread throughout Florida, and residents have returned to pre-pandemic activities. The recent rise is both striking and not-at-all surprising, Salemi said in an email late Saturday.
Federal health data released Saturday showed that Florida reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, the state s highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic.
US hits vaccine milestone as 70% of US adults now have at least 1 dose

WASHINGTON - The United States hit a notable milestone on Monday in its urgent vaccination effort against COVID-19: 70% of U.S. adults have now received at least one dose of a vaccine.
The U.S. has ramped up vaccination rates in recent weeks amid the spread of the highly contagious delta variant, reaching the highest seven-day average of newly vaccinated people since July 4.
The marker of 70% of individuals 18 and older who have received at least one vaccine dose comes nearly a month after President Joe Biden had hoped to meet that threshold. Regardless, officials welcomed the achievement as the delta variant fuels COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the country once again largely among the unvaccinated.

Florida has set another COVID-19 pandemic record, hours after reaching its highest total for new daily cases.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services reports Florida currently has 10,207 confirmed hospitalizations in relation to COVID-19 cases, which surpassed a previous record of 10,170 hospitalizations on July 23, 2020,
The Florida Hospital Association confirmed the previous record, which occurred more than a half-year before vaccinations became available to the public.
Florida now leads all U.S. states in per capita hospitalizations for COVID-19, which includes hospitals across the Sunshine State opting to put emergency room visitors in beds in hallways, as well as others reporting a significant drop in the age of patients.

Yeah, sorry. No one’s in the mood for COVID advice from a guy named Cuomo, particularly fans of DeSantis.
But this clip makes for an interesting pair with Fauci’s point in the last post about people “encroaching” on the “rights” of others by not masking up. Mandates are designed to prevent that encroachment in theory. But there are two kinds of mandates at this stage of the pandemic:
Precautionary mandates, e.g., requiring masks, capacity limits on businesses, and so on to limit transmission, and
vaccine mandates, requiring the unvaccinated to get their shots as a condition of employment. Having both types of mandates in place would feel like overkill: If most of the population is getting vaxxed to satisfy their boss, why encumber them with precautions too? They’ve already taken the ultimate precaution by getting immunized.
