New UGA center to combat global human trafficking 5 hours ago Leaders will use research, programming and advocacy to drive efforts Each year, an estimated 800,000 people are trafficked globally, though the true number may be higher. In a quest to arm officials and stakeholders around the globe with more accurate and trusted data to better understand and address this global problem, the University of Georgia has established a new interdisciplinary center to combat human trafficking through research, programming and policy development. The Center on Human Trafficking Research & Outreach will be housed in the School of Social Work, and David Okech, an associate professor at the school, will serve as the center’s first director. This collaborative effort aims to identify better ways to measure the prevalence of  trafficking while crafting real-world solutions to best equip nongovernmental organizations and policymakers with the tools and information they need to combat trafficking

University of Georgia to host virtual launch of anti-trafficking program in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone Telegraph: 28 February 2021: The University of Georgia (UGA), the U.S. Department of State, and World Hope International will co-host a virtual Sierra Leone Child Anti-Trafficking Program Launch Event on Tuesday, March 2 nd at 2 pm. This free virtual launch event will detail the results of groundbreaking child trafficking research and a new, impactful program for child trafficking survivors in Sierra Leone. The forum is presented by the African Programming and Research Initiative to End Slavery (APRIES) at the University of Georgia School of Social Work, the U.S. Department of State Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, the U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone, and World Hope International. The Honorable Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, is the keynote speaker.

The United States of America, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and UNODC Human Trafficking Seminar WASHINGTON, THE HAGUE - On February 1, 2021, the United States of America and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with participants from the Netherlands and Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten participated in a virtual seminar on strategies to better combat human trafficking led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The seminar followed a prior training conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice. UNODC focused on tools for criminal justice practitioners, as well as challenges, and achievements in international cooperation on human trafficking cases. In particular, UNODC featured the TRACK4TIP initiative to enhance the regional criminal justice response to human trafficking among migration flows involving Venezuelans by working at regional and local levels to identify, prevent, and prosecute human trafficking cases.
