Detroit to Receive $30 Million to Build Apartments and Residential Units in Corktown

Detroit is receiving $30 million in federal funding to build 840 new housing units  with 500 set aside under the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development’s “affordable” housing guidelines  in Corktown. The city was selected by HUD as part of the Choice Neighborhoods program, and the money will toward three projects in the neighborhood, including new apartments near the Michigan Central Station on Michigan Avenue. Ford is building a new 30-acre campus in Corktown.

The grave Nunes visited is in the cemetery’s old section, as she called it. It’s located on the east side along the stone wall near one of the Route 6 entrances. There is a nearby gateway where those setting up camp in the cemetery enter, Nunes witnessed.   Who monitors St. Mary s Cemetery? St. Mary’s Cemetery is owned by the Fall River Diocese and is not under the authority of the City of New Bedford. This limits what actions police can or cannot take on the grounds, said New Bedford Police public information officer Melissa Batchilder.  Officers cannot move them along unless the diocese wants them removed, Batchilder said.

Nunes shot a video of the incident and verbally chastised the woman.   Nunes said there is a group of panhandlers near the Route 6 entrance to the cemetery who camp out on the cemetery grounds, leaving bedding and trash behind and engaging in inappropriate behavior. 

Savannah Housing Authority looks to demolish Yamacraw Village | WTKS

(WTOC) - The Savannah Housing Authority is looking into asking federal officials for permission to demolish one of the city’s biggest and oldest low-income housing developments. The Housing Authority of Savannah says they got an assessment done on the property, and that survey found that it would take $40 million to bring Yamacraw Village up to current affordable housing standards. The executive director says that makes it eligible for HUD to consider demolishing it. Yamacraw Village was built 1940. It is the Housing Authority of Savannah’s oldest property in their portfolio. They say in the last 80 years housing needs and standards have changed.
