The number of signatories on the letter, which has been circulated for nearly a week by Reps. Marie Newman and Mark Pocan, is significantly higher than what sources had been expecting, reflecting the steadily growing disapproval of the displacement plans within the Democratic Party.

Democrats urge Blinken to pressure Israel on Palestinian evictions in Jerusalem

Follow May. 7, 2021 WASHINGTON – House Democrats are urging U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to exert diplomatic pressure on Israel to prevent the eviction of Palestinians from homes on land claimed by Jewish settlers in Jerusalem. A letter circulated by Reps. Marie Newman and Mark Pocan and made public on Friday states that Israel’s plans to demolish Palestinian homes in Al-Bustan and to evict Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah are in clear violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Dozens of Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood have faced potential eviction for years, amid intensified efforts from right-wing settler groups that assert the land was owned by Jews before 1948, when Israel was founded. The threat of eviction has led to frequent protests.
