His work has led to improvements in maternal, infant and young child feeding, and early childhood development programs globally. He has published 270 peer reviewed articles and lectured extensively across world regions. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and has served as senior scientific advisor to UNICEF, the World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
