Federal judge says shotgun was seized without probable cause in Pa. man’s weapons case Updated 10:13 PM; WILLIAMSPORT – An unregistered sawed-off shotgun found in a Potter County cabin in 2019 cannot be used as evidence because a judge has ruled probable cause was lacking to issue a search warrant. That weapon is the basis of three firearms charges in U.S. Middle District Court against the cabin owner, Thomas G. Stanko, 50, of Unity. Judge Matthew W. Brann on Tuesday ruled that nothing in the search warrant affidavit can be reasonably construed as implying the existence of firearms in the cabin. An indictment was unsealed Friday in U.S. Middle District Court charging William K. Zwernemann and Kaitlyn Jo Zechman with conspiracy to distribute and distribution of a controlled substance. Zwernemann also is charged with possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. Mildred Hoy of the Bellefonte area was charged Wednesday in U.S. Middle District Court with conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud. She has signed an agreement to plead guilty and make full restitution. Between December 2019 and January 2021 she is accused of persuading people who believed they had won a lottery to send her money to “unlock” their winnings. Hoy is alleged to have received on multiple occasions bulk cash by the mail, FedEx and United Parcel Service, repackage it and send it to a co-conspirator in Texas.
