(The Center Square) The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has the governor of Wyoming s support to go forward with a wild horse gather in the southwestern part of the state.
Wyoming s southwestern gather will manage herds across Carbon, Fremont, Lincoln, Sublette, and Sweetwater counties, according to a
press release from Governor Mark Gordon s office. The federal agency, which manages resources on 18 million acres in Wyoming, has
determined that there are excess wild horses within the Adobe Town, Salt Wells Creek, Great Divide Basin, White Mountain and Little Colorado [Habitat Management Areas].

ELY- A coalition of environmental groups have reached a settlement with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management that requires the agency to revisit its decision to renew 13 prospecting permits near here. The permits could have allowed Antofagasta’s Twin Metals venture to significantly expand its proposed sulfide-ore copper mine just upstream of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The groups filed suit last year, challenging a four-year extension of the prospecting permits, which was done without required environmental review. To settle the lawsuit, the BLM has agreed to provide for public comment, conduct an analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act, consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about the plan’s potential harm to endangered species, and then issue a new decision. PHOENIX (AP) A major public land management agency is joining others in imposing fire restrictions that will cover wide swaths of drought-stricken Arizona. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management announced Thursday it will implement additional restrictions across the central and northern portions of the state starting Friday. NEAR DUGWAY PROVING GROUND, Tooele County – Every Wednesday morning in Utah s West Desert, volunteers armed with rifles have ventured into a herd of wild horses and fire away at the mustangs.
It s not to hurt them. It s to give them a better shot at survival. Because I love the horses, said Jessica Franzen explaining her role in what amounts to a long-running science experiment. It s aimed at resolving a decades-old controversy over the future of the picturesque mustangs. I do love helping out, she said. There s a huge need.
The volunteers tried to maneuver themselves close enough to get a clean shot at the hindquarters of a wild mare. Instead of using gunpowder and bullets, their rifles used CO2 to fire a dart that packs a chemical punch. Each dart delivered a shot of PZP which makes a mare sterile, temporarily. One booster shot each year keeps her that way.
