The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted and shot a steam cloud into the atmosphere that lasted about an hour, an official with the National Weather Service has said.
The eruption began late on Sunday within the Halema’uma’u crater, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The volcano is located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Tom Birchard, a senior forecaster with the National Weather Service in Hawaii, said a new lava flow interacted with a pool of water inside the crater and that led to a short-lived but fairly vigorous eruption.

Researchers develop new tool to help regrow burned-down forests

New research at the University of California, Davis with support from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Cal Fire, and the U.S. Forest Service aims to understand how forests regenerate after wildfires.

The team has managed to create a predictive mapping tool that showcases where forests may have trouble regrowing after burning down. This tool can be used to nurture those areas that could have trouble recovering on their own, an especially important task in the wake of the massive wildfires we’ve seen in Australia and the USA this year.

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii s Big Island has erupted, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The eruption began late on Sunday within the Halema uma u crater. The volcano is located inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Soon after the eruption, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck the region, officials said.
By 1 am, USGS officials told Hawaii News Now that there were reports of lava fountains shooting about 165 feet (50 meters) into the sky and feeding a growing lava lake within the crater that used to hold water.

North Escambia reported that it was flooded with comments from people reporting the incident starting a quarter past noon. Most of the comments were from the Cantonment and Beulah areas, but other reports also came from the neighboring Santa Rosa County.
