The USGS data showed that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit central California with an epicenter near the border with the state of Nevada on Thursday afternoon. A second 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit near the California city of Stockton seconds later, the data shows. (ANI/Sputnik)

by Tyler Durden Thursday, Jul 08, 2021 - 09:13 PM An earthquake rocked Central California, followed by dozens of aftershocks Thursday afternoon. Much of the shaking was recorded in Coleville (Mono County).  At 1549 local time, a magnitude 5.9 hit Coleville, approximately 150 miles east of Sacramento, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Shortly after, a swarm of more than two dozen quakes ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 4.6 hit Coleville and surrounding areas. During the shaking, people across Mono County took out their smartphones and filmed wild scenes of rockslides.  Twitter user Brett Durrant was traveling on I395 near Coleville when he noticed the earthquake started to wiggle the road. He uploaded stunning footage of massive rockslides. 

Update: Earthquake Rocks Mother Lode

Updated Earthquake in the Walker Coleville area, west of HWY 395 in California Update at 5:17 p.m.:  The initial reports from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the 5.9 magnitude earthquake was centered in Smith Valley, Nevada. That has been revised to the Walker/Coleville area of California, west of Highway 395, which is closed from that area to the Nevada Stateline due to a rockslide.
