Invasive zebra mussels were found on products at pet stores in nearly two dozen states after first being reported in Seattle. The destructive shellfish were found in 21 states nationwide, including California, Oregon and Alaska, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported Monday. Zebra mussels are native to freshwaters in Eurasia and were discovered on moss balls, which are ornamental plants that are native to Ukraine and often added to.
Uncovering Hidden Forever Chemicals
New tool finds and fingerprints previously undetected PFAS compounds in watersheds on Cape Cod
Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) found large quantities of previously undetectable compounds from the family of chemicals known as PFAS in six watersheds on Cape Cod using a new method to quantify and identify PFAS compounds. Exposures to some PFAS, widely used for their ability to repel heat, water, and oil, are linked to a range of health risks including cancer, immune suppression, diabetes, and low infant birth weight.
The new testing method revealed large quantities of previously undetected PFAS from fire-retardant foams and other unknown sources. Total concentrations of PFAS present in these watersheds were above state maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for drinking water safety.
Technology provides valuable seconds March 09 2021
When disaster strikes, being prepared can make a big difference.
A preparedness tool called ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System will be activated in Oregon on March 11. Already in place in California, ShakeAlert detects significant earthquakes quickly and sends an alert to people before shaking arrives at their location. The time between receiving the alert and feeling the shaking gives people critical seconds to protect themselves. No action needs to be taken on March 11 and no sign up is required, commented Paula Fasano Negele, public information officer for Oregon Office of Emergency Management. These important alerts come automatically on most cell phones making a distinctive sound and a text message that reads Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself.
A U.S. Geological Survey expert launched nationwide alerts that led to the discovery of the "destructive shellfish" in pet stores across the country—from Alaska to Florida.
