NDSU Pharmacy Student Receives National Award from U S Public Health Service

(Fargo, ND) A big honor coming down for one North Dakota State University student making a difference in patient care. For her work to help underserved populations, NDSU pharmacy student Karly Westra this week received the U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award. For the past two years, Westra served as ambulatory care clinical pharmacy intern at Family HealthCare, a local clinic that cares for underserved patients who may be homeless, have low health literacy, limited resources, language barriers, or other barriers to receiving health care. Each week, Westra partners with this patient population. She helps them access care and increase their chances of optimal outcomes in the following areas:  hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment, tobacco use disorder, diabetes, anticoagulation, transitions of care, and other chronic disease states. She assists in direct patient care and in population health efforts to improve outcomes.

Feds Open New Migrant Child Detention Site in Long Beach, California 22 Apr 2021 Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the opening of another Emergency Intake Site (EIS) to move increasing numbers of unaccompanied children out of Customs and Border Protection custody. The development follows recent announcements by HHS to address the surge in unaccompanied children flooding the southern border. The new EIS facility will be located at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California. The center will receive 150 unaccompanied migrant children on Thursday, April 22. The Emergency Intake Site will provide shelter for up to 1,000 females under the age of 17 and boys under 12 years of age. HHS has opened 15 EISs since February. One, located in Houston, Texas, recently closed without any reasons given.

The second shelter will be at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, which has 372 beds. This is a fraction of the space being used at the Freeman Coliseum shelter in East Bexar County, which is housing an estimated 1,800 migrant children. According to an announcement from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, 100 boys, between the ages of 13 and 17, will arrive at the intake site.
