When it comes to housing, Black women face greater burdens with those costs than other groups due to COVID-19, a new report shows.
The finding comes as women in general now are more likely than men to be renters, unemployed, and caregivers as the pandemic lingers on, boosting the likelihood of them being overloaded financially on housing costs. The Zillow analysis disclosed some startling findings tied to women.
The report shows women renters are the hardest hit group impaired by the pandemic recession. The median female renter household spends around 22% of their income on housing. The median Black female renter household spends more at 29%, while the number is 30% for Latinx female renter households. Nearly 49% of Black female renters households and 51% Latinx female renter households are cost-burdened, allocating over 30% of their income on housing.

As 2020 winds down, roughly 23 percent of households in the U.S. are struggling with food insecurity, a number that has doubled since last year.
Experts project over 50 million Americans will be food insecure in 2020, including roughly 17 million children, Craig Gundersen, a Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics professor at the University of Illinois, says.
In 2019, roughly 13.7 million U.S. families – 10.5 percent of households – experienced food insecurity at some point, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since state-mandated shutdowns began in most states in mid-March, the number of U.S. families experiencing food insecurity has roughly doubled, a number which coincides with high unemployment.
