Stonington The Board of Finance voted unanimously Wednesday night to contribute up to $300,000 to help preserve 220 acres of land off Al Harvey Road.
The tentative funding model calls for the town to contribute the money from its $375,000 Open Space Fund to the $1.15 million purchase price for the land. It also calls for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to contribute $580,000 and the Aquarion Water Co. another $230,000 for as conservation easement. None of the other funding has yet been committed and the $230,000 could end up being a combination of other funding sources, according to the Trust for Public Land.
The town s support and commitment, though, will help the Trust for Public Land, which negotiated the purchase and is assisting the town, to raise the additional funds for the purchase.

The Bureau of Land Management is proposing to acquire more than 11,000 acres south and east of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, a portion of which is along a five-mile stretch of the lower Musselshell River.
In an environmental assessment the agency released on Monday, the proposed acquisition would consolidate 39,130 acres of its land along the border of Petroleum and Garfield counties that abuts the refuge. In the process, the acquisition would provide access to 8,040 acres of BLM land and 1,320 acres of State Trust lands now inaccessible to the public, according to the EA.
âThe Lower Musselshell River Acquisition Project represents a rare and unique opportunity to improve access into an area that is already a very popular outdoor recreation destination,â said Eric Lepisto, Miles City Field Office manager, in a statement.

A lone gray wolf crossed the Oregon border into California earlier this month, traveling further south than any lobo that wildlife officials have previously tracked.
The male wolf, known as OR-93, is known to have originated from Oregon’s White River pack, southeast of Mt. Hood. He was fitted with a GPS tracking collar last year by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
