New Bedford Latin Kings Members Fall in Federal Court
Two former members of the New Bedford Latin Kings appeared in Massachusetts federal court this week. One pleaded guilty to RICO charges, and another was sentenced to prison.
Roberto Vargas and Shelton Johnson were among the 62 defendants indicted in the massive December 2019 federal law enforcement raid known as Operation Throne Down. Vargas is the 35th defendant in that case to plead guilty.
Vargas, 27, known as “King Royalty,” admitted to conducting enterprise affairs through a pattern of racketeering activity, commonly referred to as RICO conspiracy, and conspiracy to distribute, manufacture and possess with intent to distribute cocaine base.

Sophia Velasquez, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl after being charged following a multi-agency task force through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, a partnership between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies..
Velasquez admitted to conspiring with Dairon Rivera, who uses the alias King Mafia, to sell 17 grams of fentanyl to a witness who was cooperating with investigators. That transaction that was recorded on audio and video.

Alexis Velasquez, a former member of the Latin Kings, pleaded guilty to racketeering charges on Wednesday in a Boston federal court.
Court records and federal authorities said Velasquez tried to kill a rival gang member using poisoned narcotics in 2019 and attacked a rival gang member in prison in 2010.
U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling’s office stated the 32-year-old Velasquez, also known as, ‘King Booboo,’ is a former member of the Boston-based Morton Street Bricks (MSB) Chapter of the Massachusetts Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation. Named after the Morton Street housing project in Boston, the MSB Chapter of the Latin Kings included approximately about six members.
