Senior housing proposed on Southridge Mall property
BY BUSINESS RECORD STAFF Wednesday, March 31, 2021 9:00 AM Des Moines’ Plan and Zoning Commission on Thursday will hear a request to rezone 4.3 acres of the Southridge Mall site to allow construction of multifamily housing for low-income people who are 55 and older.
The proposed development by AHEPA Management Co. would be constructed in an area where surface parking is now located, according to city documents. Specifically, the housing would be located west of Southridge Mall near the southeast corner of the intersection of Southeast Fifth Street and Army Post Road.
City staff are recommending approval of the request. There is a need for housing in this portion of the city that is designed, situated and operated to meet the specific needs of older individuals, the staff wrote in information provided to commission members.
