Καλησπέρα everybody! Let me start, President Saltiel, my friend David, Mayor Elisaf, guests, friends, let me say what a huge honor it is for me to join you for the 15th Annual David Tiano Lecture, which our Consulate has organized over many years to honor the memory of our former colleague.
I really miss doing this event live in Thessaloniki this year, but I want to thank Liz and the Consulate team for bringing us together in this virtual setting. I also want to say a huge thank you to our honored guest speakers: my friend Zanet Battinou, Professor Cohen, and especially Ioannina Mayor Moses Elisaf for doing us the honor of joining us to speak about the Romaniote community of Ioannina.

There was a time, not so long ago, when there was wide consensus about what antisemitism is and why it should be combatted in all its forms. Manifestations of Jew hatred and anti-Semitic rhetoric were relegated to the fringes of society in the decades following the defeat of the Nazi regime and the exposure of their atrocities in the Holocaust. But as time progressed, classic anti-Semitism re-emerged from the shadows. In addition, anti-Zionism the rejection of self-determination for Jews in their ancestral homeland continues to gain considerable ground, sparking debate about whether it is just another manifestation of anti-Semitism.

At this historic time for reflection and action – members of the Western Region community supporting the efforts of the D.C.-basedU.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum(USHMM) will come together virtually on March 11 at 7 p.m. PT.
