Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was so much more than a quote to post on Twitter–and a new art series curated by Patrisse Cullors and Noni Limar of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation attempts to remind us of just that. The series asked artists to share images of and reflections on Dr. King in moments of rest, joy, and celebration.
“This MLK day, BLMGNF is centering life, love, joy, rest, and pleasure. We will not allow white supremacists violence to deter us from the dignity and humanity of Black life,” says Cullors, who is also cofounder and executive director of the foundation. “Every artist in this series was handpicked because each of them center love as part of their work. We know MLK believed in love as the center of his work and at the center of the civil rights movement. Join us in honoring his legacy through this beautiful and transformative artist series.”

In the summer of 1967, Ebony magazine readers were offered a rare and deeply personal look into the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The esteemed leader had dispensed with his suits and ties the standard uniform for mass meetings and court appearances. An elegant photo spread captured King in swim trunks, pajamas and slippers. King was at rest. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Ochos Rios, Jamaica, and unknowingly in the penultimate winter of his life, King’s time away from his multiple responsibilities to the freedom movement revealed an intimate portrait of a leader in transformation.

th, you may notice some of the main Alton thoroughfares will be closed for an hour or so in the early afternoon. The Alton Branch NAACP will host the inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King Day celebration parade. A motorcade is being used to honor the life of Dr. King this year due to public health concerns.
Rather than gather in an enclosed area this year, Rosetta Brown, Second Vice President of the Alton NAACP says they came up with the idea of having a motorcade instead. She tells The Big Z once they get to James Killion Park at Salu, there will be a short ceremony.
