This strain of the coronavirus, which scientists believe is more contagious than earlier versions, has not been detected in Essex County before. No hospital in Clinton, Essex or Franklin counties has the capability to test in-house for the variant, and until this week, the random sampling for the variant at the state’s top lab, the Wadsworth Center in Albany, hadn’t uncovered a case of the variant here. The Essex County Health Department announced the lab’s discovery late Wednesday night. Scant details were available at that time.

The DOH confirmed the higher numbers that afternoon, releasing for the first time the number of presumed long-term care coronavirus fatalities. According to state Health Department Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker, department data audited to date shows 12,743 total skilled nursing facility resident fatalities, including 9,786 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 complications 5,957 fatalities within nursing facilities and 3,829 in hospitals and 2,957 presumed virus nursing home fatalities from March 1, 2020 to Jan. 19, 2021.

(WWNY) - A more virulent strain of COVID-19 first found in the United Kingdom has been identified in Essex County. It’s that county’s first known case of the variant and the first known to be in northern New York. In a Facebook post, the Essex County Health Department said it was notified late Wednesday by state health officials that the strain was found in a county resident. The case was identified by random sampling at the state’s Wadsworth laboratory as part of ongoing surveillance efforts.
