Corrections officer smuggled contraband to inmates at N.J. jail, prosecutor says
Updated Feb 26, 2021;
An Essex County corrections officer was charged with smuggling banned tobacco products to inmates at the county jail in exchange for money, prosecutors said Thursday.
Keith Peterman, 29, was charged by summons with knowingly introducing contraband to the Essex County Correctional Facility, acting county Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens announced.
Peterman brought “tobacco products,” which he knew inmates were not allowed to have, into the jail, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.
“The introduction of contraband into the Essex County Correctional Facility creates a serious risk,” said Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Perez, who is handling the case. “The defendant jeopardized the safety of his colleagues and the inmates entrusted to his care, custody, and control.”
