Bäumler’s demise a ‘sad day’ for menswear
The industry has bid farewell to Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group-owned German menswear brand Bäumler this week.
On 8 October, insolvency administrators Pluta Rechtsanwalts were appointed to manage the liquidation of Bäumler. The fashion house, based in Ingolstadt, Germany, was forced to file for insolvency due to liquidity problems, as it had seen “significant declines” in sales due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Yesterday, 31 March, was Bäulmer s final day of business. All staff had their contracts terminated, and the company s goods are currently being liquidated by the administrators.
The German menswear brand had been part of Philip Day’s Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group since 2018, when the group purchased former owner Berwin & Berwin out of administration.

Pic: Shutterstock Collapsed UK fashion retailer Peacocks has been bought out of administration by Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group’s (EWM) chief operating officer (COO) Steve Simpson with backing from an international consortium, it was announced recently. The takeover will save 2,000 jobs and 200 stores, which Simpson hopes to reopen once lockdown restrictions on non-essential retailers ease. Peacocks was part of the Philip Day-owned EWM fashion retail empire which collapsed in November last year. The new owner will pick up the £70million tab owed to unsecured creditors – including suppliers and landlords, UK media reported. EWM, Ponden Home and Bonmarche were rescued from administration in early January in a complex deal with investment consortium Purepay Retail.
