Michaela Coel to Release Misfits: A Personal Manifesto Book

Michaela Coel s New Book, Misfits: A Personal Manifesto, Will Arrive in September 0 Shares Michaela Coel just announced the release of her debut book, Misfits: A Personal Manifesto, due for release in September. The BAFTA award-winning actor and writer will be sharing personal anecdotes from her life and her career, while looking back on her journey so far. Described by Penguin as a powerful manifesto on how speaking your truth and owning your differences can transform your life, the book is said to draw upon Coel s powerful lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival back in 2018. During the lecture, Coel explained that she was seeking out people who are willing to be transparent, and that comes with the risk of losing everything. But I don t mind because I d rather have transparency.

The Tories are coming for the BBC

Published date: 16 March 2021 12:20 UTC | Last update: 1 week 6 days ago Prime Minister Boris Johnson has talked of cutting the BBC down to size, and the licence fee is under attack as never before This year sees the launch of a new and potentially serious challenge to existing broadcasters: Rupert Murdoch’s News UK is launching a new cable TV news channel. Another cable channel, GB News, backed by £60m ($83m) of capital and fronted by the broadcaster and journalist Andrew Neil, is also about to launch. Both are targeting disaffected BBC viewers. GB News will be aimed at “the vast number of British people who feel underserved and unheard by their media”. According to the channel’s chief executive, it will be “proudly independent and fearless in tackling the issues people care about”.

What is journalism for? The short answer: truth | Media

Broadcasters in the UK are forced to be fair and impartial in their news coverage, in order to hold a licence. The rules come under section 5 of the regulator Ofcom’s codes covering due impartiality, accuracy and opinions. Similar rules did exist in America, but they were thrown out more than 30 years ago, when Ronald Reagan was president, and attempts since to revive the legislation have always stalled on the altar of the first amendment, the right to free speech. So in the US you can say what you like within the law – your opinion is protected and you can use all your power and might to beam that opinion right across the land, without giving any counter-arguments, without reporting the opposing point of view. Opinion can be dressed up as news.

The Golden Globes completely ignored I May Destroy You – and made it more powerful than ever

The Golden Globes completely ignored I May Destroy You – and made it more powerful than ever This year s shambolic awards show will soon be forgotten, but its ridiculous exclusion of Michaela Coel will only enhance her reputation I May Destroy Speaks for itself: Michaela Coel wrote and stars as Arabella  Credit: Laura Radford In spite of fierce competition from the muted microphones, the awkward camera cuts, Daniel Kaluuya’s refusal to be interrupted mid-acceptance speech, and Jason Sudeikis’ tie-dye hoodie, the real winner of last night’s Golden Globes was a woman who wasn’t there.  When the 2021 nominations were announced last month, the internet had an instant meltdown over the exclusion of I May Destroy You, the BBC-HBO drama series written, show-run by, and starring Michaela Coel, which tackled sexual consent, drugs and drinking culture, life as black millennial Londoner specifically, and the ethical perplexities of being a human being more generally.
