IN January 2021 the Scottish Government is to publish the findings of a review into social care in Scotland. In the outline we read that it will take a “human rights-based” approach to the issue. Nicola Sturgeon has said that the Government’s response will include considering the possibility of a National Care Service, but what is not spoken of is how such a service is to be funded. In response to an open invitation the Scottish Socialist Party has submitted a paper outlining our vision of a National Care Service, namely that it should be publicly run and funded and, crucially, free at the point of need.

The Gorgie Road site which York-based developer S Harrison has sold for an undisclosesd sum. A YORK-based property developer has sold a prominent site for an undisclosed sum. S Harrison secured planning permission on the Gorgie Road site in Edinburgh earlier this year for a major new student accommodation scheme. It consists of 248 bedrooms in two buildings made up of 35 studio rooms and cluster apartments, ranging from six to 10 bedrooms. It will benefit from study rooms, a games area, gym, cinema, laundry and secure cycle storage, as well as incorporating landscaping, connecting the buildings to the riverbank on the Water of Leith.

Lovers of adventure stories are no doubt familiar with Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who penned ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘Kidnapped’ among other novels, but huge credit goes to several distinguished individuals who have helped keep the author’s achievements alive.
I had the great pleasure of meeting these people on a recent three-week trip to Scotland, a literary tourism expedition on the trail of the famed Edinburgh-born author.
Take, for example, Professor Linda Dryden, Director of Research at the School of Arts and Creative Industries and Director at the Centre for Literature and Writing (CLAW) at Edinburgh Napier University.
