• ‘COVID-19, Rising Drug Resistance Threaten Disease Elimination • Slowing Down On Fight May Increase Child Mortality, Mokuolu Warns As nations celebrate World Malaria Day (WMD) today, Nigeria and other African countries worse hit by the disease may get more relief and inch near the global zero malaria target with mass deployment of malaria vaccine by October this year. x The cheery news came with indications that the malaria vaccine jab, RTS, S has passed safety and efficacy tests in clinical trials and may be globally approved for mass deployment and adoption in national immunisation programmes. Again, another malaria vaccine was reported by the University of Oxford team to have proven to be 77 per cent effective in early trials and could be a major breakthrough against the disease. The said vaccine was found to be safe and showed “high-level efficacy” over 12 months of follow-up.

Lagos reports 700,000 malaria cases annually

Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, has said. Mr Abayomi made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday in Lagos in celebration of the 2021 World Malaria Day. The World Malaria Day (WMD) is commemorated annually on April 25, to create awareness on the global burden of malaria, and to mobilise support for the Roll Back Malaria strategies. The theme for 2021 World Malaria Day celebration is: “Zero Malaria – Draw the Line against Malaria’’ with the slogan; “Stand Up–Take Action”. Mr Abayomi said malaria accounts for more than 70 per cent of the outpatients in the state public healthcare facilities, with more than 700,000 malaria cases reported annually.
