In an effort to curb the growing number of opioid overdose deaths during the pandemic, the Drug Enforcement Agency will hold its 20 th annual Take Back Day this Saturday at locations across South Florida and across the country. The event comes just months after a successful day last October, when over 500 tons of unwanted drugs were turned in. Over the last 10 years, more than 6,800 tons of prescription drugs have been turned in.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday – What you need to know Emily Oliver © Provided by WBNS Columbus On Saturday, April 24, police agencies across central Ohio plan to take part in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Take Back Day.  The day is an opportunity to safely dispose of your prescription medications to help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., police agencies will provide drive-through drop-offs or other means for people to dispose of their expired and unused medications.   This year will mark the 20th Take Back Day hosted by the DEA.  To date, the agency has collected 13,684,848 pounds of unused medicines across the nation. Ohio ranks 5th in the country for the most collected by weight, behind California, Texas, Wisconsin and Illinois.

As part of the event, ASAP of Anderson is partnering with police departments in Anderson County to provide the community a “safe and convenient option to properly dispose of their medicines,” a press release said. “These events help avoid accidental diversion as well as environmental concerns that some home disposal methods can cause.” The press release said opioid overdose deaths have increased during the pandemic. Home medicine lock boxes and other resources will be available to community members at all locations on Saturday, April 24, the press release said.
