It s going to be a busy summer!
So many great national acts will be making their way through Iowa these next few months, but don t forget about the local acts! There are some wildly talented musicians in our area, and I get the pleasure of experiencing new ones every year as a judge at the Cedar Rapids Battle of the Bands. I m a big fan of live music, no matter what genre it is!
I ve enjoyed some great local acts these past few years, so I thought I would put together a list of a few of my favorites, just in case anyone is looking for some fun live music to enjoy this summer.

New Jersey alternative rockers
Serious Matters have unveiled their first new music of 2021, with new single âGlitches.â
âGlitchesâ tackles issues of mental health, with Serious Mattersâ trademark 00s alternative rock delivery incorporating elements of emo and post-hardcore on candid new track.
âThis track treads the line of not being able to speak up for yourself when needed and letting go of disloyal people. This song was put together in separate entities due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so not everyone was together all at the same time until we hit the studio. The music video is all of us finally being in a room together again, recording the song and enjoying being around each other for the first time in a year.â â Kenny Byles
The song “Dear Maria Count Me In” by All Time Low came out more than 13 years ago. Just a few months ago, the song, a pop-punk staple, became a newfound sensation on the social media app TikTok after a guy wearing a Vans beanie filmed himself rocking out to the song and proclaiming, “Mom, it was never a phase. It’s a lifestyle.”
It caught on. His video gained a couple of million views and others filmed their own versions. Even the lead singer of All Time Low made one.
And that phrase “Mom, it was never a phase. It’s a lifestyle.” became a sort of rallying cry for fans of emo music who never left behind their love of emo music.
