Signal uses Facebook s ads against it, gets banned instead (Updated)

Messaging app Signal has revealed a series of Instagram ads that were banned by Facebook. The ads uniquely highlighted just how much data Facebook collected on its users. Private messaging app Signal has enjoyed a boost in adoption owing to WhatsApp’s new terms and conditions, but it looks like the company is going on the offensive when it comes to Facebook’s platforms. Signal crafted an ad on Instagram in a bid to highlight just how much personal data Facebook’s platforms collect on its users. “The ad would simply display some of the information collected about the viewer which the advertising platform uses,” Signal explained in a blog post (h/t:

YouTube TV app removed from Roku channel store

Roku has removed YouTube TV from its channel store after negotiations with Google broke down. YouTube TV will, however, remain available for current subscribers on Roku devices. Google issued a response to Roku’s assertions that the issue stems from Google, not Roku. Updated, April 30, 2021 (12:30 PM ET): The drama between Roku and Google over the fate of YouTube on Roku’s streaming hardware just escalated again. This time, Google has finally chimed in to give its own account on the spat between the two companies. In a lengthy blog post, Google explains that it didn’t want to change anything about its current contract with Roku. It claims that it did, however, point out that the current contract stipulates that Roku must update its hardware in order to support certain streaming formats related to YouTube. Allegedly, Roku refused this, which is what’s causing the stand-still.

Google, Roku argument could push YouTube TV off Rokus

Roku’s ongoing negotiations with Google could result in Roku users losing YouTube TV access. Roku says Google’s various requests to change the Roku platform to more heavily favor YouTube are “predatory, anti-competitive, and discriminatory.” Nothing is set in stone yet, but anyone who uses YouTube TV on a Roku should be nervous. Roku is, by far, the market dominator when it comes to media streamers. Whether it’s a streaming stick, a set-top box, or even a full-blown television, Rokus are how millions of people consume media content. Throughout its history, Roku has used that market dominance to earn more favorable contracts with streaming providers as well as fight to preserve the integrity of its platform. Unfortunately, those fights sometimes result in losses for the users. As a recent example, an HBO Max channel didn’t show up on Rokus until long after the service launched due to negotiation troubles between the two companies.
