In retirement, founding member of Edmonds Diversity Commission reflects on five years of service

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: January 15, 2021 Pat Valle Pat Valle, recently retired from the Edmonds Diversity Commission, offered the following statement on her five years with the commission, where she served since its founding in 2015, and most recently served as chair: As the last founding member of the Edmonds Diversity Commission, stepping down now after five years of service, I would like to offer some history and observations of the commission and its work. The fall of 2015 brought this new commission to Edmonds. Established by the Edmonds City Council, the Diversity Commission is charged with promoting and embracing diversity through action, education, and guidance. The commission seeks to foster an understanding that includes, accepts, respects and appreciates each individual member of our community through programs, activities and policy actions. The commission advises the mayor and city council on issues related to equity, inclusion and diversity.

Black in Edmonds panelists call on city leaders to address issues with police chief selection process

The Edmonds City Council’s 4-3 decision Dec. 8 to confirm Mayor Mike Nelson’s appointment of Sherman Pruitt as the city’s next police chief. Two of the four Black in Edmonds panelists appearing Saturday via Facebook Live Alicia Crank and Richard Taylor Jr. sat on the community panel that Mayor Nelson appointed to interview both police chief candidates. Both stressed that contrary to the belief of some the panel did not make a recommendation for a preferred candidate between Pruitt, now Sauk-Suiattle Tribal Police Chief, and Edmonds’ Acting Police Chief Jim Lawless.
