On the first Thursday of January, viewers from as far away as Brazil, Norway and the Netherlands streamed a live jazz concert from Uptown Oakland. Swedish vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling, a current South Bay resident, was leading her sextet on the Piedmont Piano Co. bandstand as audience members online commented in the chat box.
Toward the end of an energetic performance, Carling reminded the virtual audience, “If you like this music, don’t forget to tip the band. And we appreciate gifts, love letters … with lipstick traces,” she joked, referencing the jazz standard “These Foolish Things.”

Visually, the Davidoff Robusto Intenso is covered in a pale, golden brown wrapper that is almost totally devoid of oil, although that does not stop it from being excessively smooth to the touch. The cigar does feature a noticeable soft spot halfway between the secondary band and the foot and is nicely firm when squeezed. Aroma from the wrapper and foot is a combination of aged cedar, old hay, dark chocolate, earth, day-old coffee and a touch of floral flavors, while the cold draw brings flavors of the same aged cedar, creamy peanuts, coffee beans, earth, cocoa nibs, floral and a small amount of cinnamon along with some distinct albeit fairly light vanilla sweetness.

“Extremely attractive” does not begin to describe the visual appeal of the Zino Platinum Limited Edition 2020, which includes a reddish espresso brown wrapper that looks like it was dipped in a vat of oil before being packaged. That wrapper is silky smooth to the touch and the cigar is both dense and very hard when squeezed. The aroma from the wrapper and foot is a combination of cocoa nibs, vegetal, leather, earth, manure and oak while the cold draw brings flavors of strong espresso beans, vegetal, leather, oak, grass, white pepper, and small amounts of both spice and a vanilla sweetness.
