Move to register electric vehicles delayed again

The initiative to bring electric vehicles under a registration system has again been caught in a delay while fatal accidents involving imported battery-run easy bikes and locally made three-wheelers like nasimon, karimon, bhatbhati and other vehicles continue across the country.
The government drafted a guideline in this regard three years ago and on Thursday a meeting was held at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority headquarters in the capital on the draft guideline.
BRTA chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder told New Age on the day that though they were in the final stage to send the draft to the road transport and bridges ministry the submission would take more time for coordination with the industries ministry.
Use of quality bitumen a must to improve road durability

Experts have suggested ensuring the use of quality bitumen in road construction to help improve the durability and longevity of roads and highways.
As Bangladesh is largely dependent on imported bitumen, they also opined for a thorough quality assessment of the imported bitumen products.
Dr Shamsul Hoque, a public transport expert and professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at BUET, observed that most of the roads in Bangladesh have been built using imported bitumen and do not last long due to various reasons.
“Only the use of quality bitumen can ensure the durability and longevity of roads. Low-quality bitumen makes roads prone to damages sooner than the expected timeframe,” he added.

Public money continues to be wasted every year to repair the dilapidated and damaged roads built by the low-quality bitumen.
Sources said that around Tk 2000 crore is spent every year in this regard, thanks to the poor oversight of the authorities concerned.
According to Road Transport and Highways Division, spending on roads repairing and rebuilding has been increasing every year due to the poor condition of roads across the country.
Experts and sector insiders think that the spending might have been far less if the roads constructed ensuring quality bitumen.
