A homeless man was arrested Tuesday after spitting in an Asian woman’s face inside her garage El Cerrito, police said.
The incident occurred outside the woman’s home near the intersection of Potrero Avenue and Everett Street at 9:25 a.m. Download our mobile app for iOS or Android to get the latest breaking news and local stories.
She told police that she had returned home and was parked in her garage when she discovered a man, who she didn’t know, followed her into her garage and began shouting race-based insults before spitting in her face.
“I think it’s really important people come together to address this issue which is important to me,” said Mountain View resident Sue Tan.
The large group marched from the Caltrain station to Mountain View City Hall, denouncing hate and violence against Asians and Pacific Islanders along the way.
Teenagers Including Amanda Khu organized it. She said someone recently shouted racial slurs at her in San Mateo.
“I think the rise in hate crimes recently and the violence against Asians pushed me to take action,” Khu said.
The Mountain View City Hall portion of the event had several speakers including Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and NBC Bay Area s Mike Inouye.
