Opposition Senator Leila de Lima on Thursday urged the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to “assume a friendly approach” to community pantries instead threatening to halt their activities.
De Lima said the DILG should put to task barangay officials to ensure the proper enforcement of COVID-19 health protocols where community pantries have been set up.
The senator made the call following Interior Secretary Eduardo Año’s warning that the agency will shut down community pantries if health protocols are violated in the process.
Año had also said that he will issue an advisory and memorandum to local government units (LGUs) on the best way to handle community pantries initiated by the private sector and individuals.

Philippines Opposition Senator Leila de Lima said that Mr Duterte should be taking a tougher stance on the hundreds of Chinese coastguard and fishing ships which have entered Manila s exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea.
While Filipino diplomatic officials have requested Beijing to withdraw its vessels from the region, Mr Duterte has remained silent on the issue.

Opposition Senator Leila de Lima on Thursday, April 15, urged the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to reevaluate its stance on the West Philippine Sea (WPS), noting how its loyalty to the country is starting to waver in favor of following the Duterte administration’s pro-China policy.

De Lima made the remark after the AFP awarded ABS-CBN reporter Chiara Zambrano and her team for raising awareness on Chinese incursions into the country’s maritime territories in the WPS a few days after calling her out for her “insatiable desire” for a scoop.

Opposition Senator Leila de Lima on Wednesday, April 14, urged the Executive Department to exert all legal remedies to assert the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) amid the increasing presence and relentless intrusion of Chinese militia vessels in the area.

In filing Senate Resolution No. 694, De Lima said it is imperative for the Duterte government to “strongly invoke” the country’s sovereign rights over the WPS instead of adopting a policy of appeasement with China.
“The Duterte administration’s refusal to strongly invoke our sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea and opting instead to adopt a policy of appeasement towards Chinese militarization may result in condoning the continued unlawful actions of the Chinese Government that assault our sovereignty in the WPS,” De Lima stated in her resolution.
