Young: I hope guard is charged for child rape
Minister of National Security Stuart Young. -
MINISTER of National Security Stuart Young said he hoped a security guard who reportedly raped an underage girl at a safe house will be charged for the crime.
His remark came on Tuesday in the Senate, where he was replying to an urgent question posed to the Prime Minister by Opposition Senator Wade Mark, who asked about steps to address reports of rape and abuse at a safe house.
Young said, “There has been one, recent, again very tragic, disturbing and upsetting report of a young female being abused by a private-sector security guard at a safe house.”

Passing the buck
Saturday 12 December 2020
IF, LIKE US, you think bad cops should pay for their misdeeds, then you will be dismayed by disclosures made in the Senate on Thursday.
Asked by Opposition Senator Wade Mark what will be done to address the State’s $50 million in costs in relation to suspended police officers, National Security Minister Stuart Young said the figure was, in fact, $31.5 million.
“Not $50 million as indicated in the question,” Mr Young clapped back.
The difference is little consolation. Underlining the lack of proper, independent oversight, the minister passed the buck to the police and the judiciary.
A Bill outlining amendments to borrowing powers for the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) was passed with amendments in Parliament.
The legislation, titled ‘The Miscellaneous Amendments (Powers of Statutory Authorities and Matters related to certain Boards) Bill, 2020’, was committed to a Committee of the Whole Senate for consideration.
According to the Bill Essentials, the Bill would amend Section 21 of the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission Act by mandating that T&TEC obtain approval from the Minister of Finance rather than the President, to borrow or raise capital.
The Bill also seeks to amend the Water and Sewerage Authority Act by increasing the number of Commissioners on the Authority from nine to 11 and allow WASA to issue securities to raise money to meet financial obligations, subject to the Finance Minister’s approval.
