The U.S. Navy is working with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) to develop first-of-its-kind Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability for its new MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAS.
GA-ASI said today that during recent tests, the Navy’s MQ-9 drone successfully tracked a small submersible target for 3 hours using 10 sonobuoys dropped from it. On November 24, GA-ASI successfully demonstrated an ‘A’ size sonobuoy carriage, release, process and control from a company-owned MQ-9A Block 5 on a U.S. Navy Pacific test range.
Using a SATCOM link, GA-ASI remotely processed bathythermal and acoustic data from deployed ‘A’ size Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR-AN/SSQ-53G), Directional Command Activated Sonobuoy System (DICASS-AN/SSQ-62F) and Bathythermograph (BT-AN/SSQ-36B) sonobuoys and accurately generated a target track in real time from the Laguna

Unmanned ASW capability will eventually be provided from SeaGuardian.
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has completed development and test of what it described on 20 January as the first self-contained ASW capability for a UAS.
The company is developing this capability for its MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAS, in partnership with the USN under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with Naval Air Systems Command.
An A size sonobuoy Carriage, release, process and control of seven AN/SSQ-53G Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoys was demonstrated by General Atomics from an MQ-9A Block 5 at a USN test range in the Pacific.

(A rendering of the MQ-9B from General Atomics) WASHINGTON – The U.S. Navy and General Atomics in November used sonobuoys dropped from an MQ-9A Block V Reaper to track a simulated submarine target on a U.S. Navy Pacific test range, in what the contractor says is the first time an aerial drone has deployed a self-contained anti-submarine warfare system. The Reaper deployed a mix of 10 sonobuoys – deployed to measure water conditions and monitor for targets – then received and transmitted the data in real time to a monitoring station at Laguna Flight Operations Facility located at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.
