Peasant group demands justice for slain barangay councilor

(Photo from Amihan Women) Tasic, 55, a councilor of Barangay Hanopol Norte, was killed by two unidentified gunmen on Tuesday morning, Feb. 16. Amihan Women mourned the death of Tasic and called for the termination of Anti-Terror Law and other state policies “authorizing extra-judicial killings, illegal arrests, and detention, and red-tagging, and other forms of human rights violations.”  “Moreover, before her death, she was constantly harassed and red-tagged by Duterte’s state forces and forced to clear her name and quit the organization,” Zenaida Soriano, National Chairperson of Amihan, said. The peasant leader also urged the public to condemn the killing of Lucresia and other EJK victims and to hold Duterte and his state forces accountable.

Ara Villena, spokesperson of Free the Artists, said that detained artists Amanda Echanis, Cheryl Catalogo and Alvin Fortaliza have done nothing wrong and merely used their art to present the story of the masses. According to Sama-samang Artista para sa Kilusang Agraryo (SAKA) Echanis, Catalogo, and Fortaliza remain in jail with writer Echanis having to nurse her three-month-old baby in prison, and theater worker Catalogo unable to attend the funeral of her father who was slain last year, himself a farmer and an activist.

SC resumes oral arguments on petitions vs anti-terror law

Published February 9, 2021 2:33pm The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday resumed the oral arguments on the petitions seeking to nullify the controversial anti-terror law. The justices are expected to continue the interpellation on the issues raised by the petitioners against the law. At the start of the oral arguments on February 2, only three justices were able ask questions to the lawyers of the petitioners about the definition of terrorism and on punishing intent, freezing of accounts and surveillance, as well as the high court’s mandate to settle actual controversies. After the petitioners, Solicitor General Jose Calida will present the side of the government and answer the queries of the justices.
