by Spencer Chase (Agri-Pulse) … On the issue of biofuels, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, pressed (Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael) Regan on the administration’s views on the future of ethanol, expressing her concern about the fact that advanced biofuels are commonly the first technology referenced in conversations on the subject not conventional corn ethanol.
Regan said “there is no intent in terms of exclusion when we talk about the promising future of electric vehicles or when we talk about the promising future of advanced biofuels.
“The reality is as we talk about these promising futures, we have to deal with here and now, and a glide path to get to these promising futures,” he added. “What we know is ethanol plays a significant role in providing those resources here and now and will evolve as we start to look at the new futures for advanced biofuels and electric vehicles.”

by Erin Veogele (Ethanol Producer Magazine) The University of Missouri’s Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute in mid-March released its 2021 U.S. Agricultural Market Outlook, predicting an increase in demand for midlevel ethanol blends, a recovery in ethanol net returns, and increased exports over the next decade.
The report notes that the COVID-19 pandemic upended agricultural markets over the past year. Looking ahead, FAPRI said the outlook for agriculture “is uncertain, but certainly more optimistic than it was a few months ago.”
For ethanol, FAPRI predicts some recovery in motor fuel demand this year, but does not expect gasoline use to reach pre-pandemic levels through the 10-year projection period to 2030. The report, however, predicts that an expansion in midlevel ethanol blends, such as E15, will lead to slow but steady growth in domestic ethanol use.
by Mark Dorenkamp (Brownfield Ag News) The CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association says it was this time last year when the pandemic pulled the rug out from underneath the ethanol industry. And 12 months later, Geoff Cooper tells Brownfield plants seem to be turning the corner.
“It was at this time a year ago when we were sort of at the top of the rollercoaster and just starting down, wondering where in the world the bottom was.”
He says domestic ethanol blending rates have returned to pre-pandemic levels and the outlook is bright.
“We’ve still got strong export demand, we’ve got analysts talking about sort of returning to pre-pandemic gasoline demand this summer. So all of that bodes well and serves as bullish factors when we look at the outlook for ethanol supply and demand.” READ MORE
