Global Conversation highlighted at Ethiopian Championships golden jubilee | NEWS

Athletes prepare for the 10km race walk at the 2021 Ethiopian Championships (© Ethiopian Athletics Federation) On the occasion of the historic 50th edition of the Ethiopian Championships, the national association seized the moment to launch the Global Conversation among its athletics community. Taking place at the Addis Ababa stadium across three days this month, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation also drew the attention of national broadcasters EBC and OBN to air the news to a wider audience. In a country where athletics legends Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Abebe Bikila, Derartu Tulu, Tirunesh Dibaba, Miruts Yifter and many more stand as national icons, the sport is held in enormous esteem. But as well as savouring the past, the federation is looking to the future and is reaching out to athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials to have their input into the World Plan for Athletics 2022-2030.

Long grounded by Covid, Ethiopian athletes hope to be fit for Tokyo

Ethiopia s long-distance runners Selemon Barega and Muktar Edris have admitted the coronavirus pandemic has hurt us a lot and cost us dearly. The premier showpiece event for track-and-field competitors - the Olympics and, namely, the 2020 Tokyo Games - have been pushed back to this year and are due to commence on 23rd July. Sadly, an athlete is only prepared when there is competition and our ability is measured by competition. We have hardly been able to compete because of COVID-19. But we are working to make things better in the future. The coronavirus pandemic has hurt us a lot , said 5000 metres long-distance runner Barega.
