The government has stopped short of committing to sending vaccine supplies despite calls for Westminster to give doses earmarked for the UK to India. India is in dire need of vaccines despite it being the world’s largest manufacturer of jabs and pressure has grown on the UK and other western countries to let India keep vaccines produced there.

According to the Ministry of Health, India recorded 401,993 new daily infections, as well as 3,523 deaths in the past 24 hours. The latest grim figures come as all adults in India are now eligible to be vaccinated. However several states, including Maharashtra, are reporting shortages of coronavirus vaccine vials which has stopped them from vaccinating more people. Inside and outside of hospitals, Covid patients are fighting for breath, ITV News Correspondent John Ray reports on Thursday India s army has opened up its hospitals as the country sets another record of new Covid-19 infections in a day - with 386,452 new cases in the last 24 hours. The country has had a total of 18.7 million confirmed cases since the pandemic began. And the Health Ministry reported 3,498 more coronavirus deaths on Friday. The country has a Covid death toll of 208,330, but experts believe the numbers are an undercount. As hospitals run out of beds, patients with severe Covid are left to fend for themselves at home or be treated at hospital car parks and in the streets. Distraught people are flooding social media with pleas for oxygen and medicines.
