Val Demings Senate campaign Thursday, giving the Florida Democrat a major boost the day after she officially launched her bid to take on incumbent GOP Sen. Marco Rubio. Demings, a former police chief and three-term Orlando-area member of Congress, has already received widespread support for the Senate run against Rubio, although she ll still have to win a Democratic primary to face him. Florida is an uphill climb for Democrats after former President Donald Trump carried the state twice, and Republicans won the last two Senate races in 2016 and 2018. But Democrats are hopeful that Demings, a rising star in the party who was considered a potential vice presidential pick, will put the massive state in play.

Hala Ayala, the first Afro-Latina elected to Virginia’s General Assembly, won the June 8 primary, advancing in her quest to become the state’s next Lieutenant Governor. If successful in the General Election in November, she stands to make history as Virginia’s first woman and its first Afro-Latina Lt. Governor.

Can Virginia Be the First State in History to Elect a Black Woman Governor?

While eight women currently serve as governors in the mainland United States (plus one in the territory of Guam), there’s never been a Black woman governor, ever, in the country.  In Virginia, three Black women are among those running for governor in the June 8 Primary Election, seeking to ascend to the Commonwealth’s highest office and potentially make history. Two Democrats Jennifer Carroll Foy and Jennifer McClellan as well as Liberation Party candidate Princess Blanding are in the race. Lt. Governor, Justin Fairfax, the state’s first Black man in that role is also running. They are joined by Terry McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chair who served as Governor from 2014 to 2018, and Republican Glenn Youngkin, who has been endorsed by former president Donald Trump.
