Evening at Pops By Joseph Schany - | Apr 20, 2021 On Saturday night, I had the privilege of attending Emmetsburg High School’s 2021 Pops Concert and I was very impressed with the talent on display all throughout the evening. This group of students has endured a number of obstacles over the past year due to the limitations placed on their lives by COVID-19, and it was great to see them all come together to put on such a spectacular show. Pops holds a special place in my heart. From the many years I’ve spent attending the annual performances, through my own years on the stage and in front of the microphone, I’ve always felt Pops to be the one event to define the Emmetsburg music program each year. The diverse array of content and entertainment showcased in its 2.5 hour (or in some years, up to 4 hour!) run-time is a direct indication of the talent and skill of not only the musicians on stage, but of the administration, crew, and everyone else behind the scenes working to brin

Obit: Michael O Leary, AEA s Longest Serving Chairman

 - March 9, 2021, 12:38 PM Michael Mike O’Leary, a 50-year aviation veteran who had become the Aircraft Electronics Association’s (AEA) longest-serving chairman, died on February 14 from Covid-19 complications. He was 69. A celebration of life event is tentatively scheduled for September 12 in Phoenix. O’Leary, who had retired from Elliott Aviation in 2020, was born and raised on a farm in northwest Iowa. After graduating from Emmetsburg High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a torpedo man on the USS Towers destroyer, according to AEA. After leaving the military, he earned his pilot’s license and A&P mechanic license, beginning his career as an avionics installer. That launched a career that continued through his retirement and involved positions at a number of avionics and electronics companies.

Around the area GOWRIE Gowrie United Methodist Church is holding a drive-thru lasagna dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. SUNDAY at the church. Lasagna, salad, French bread and dessert will be served for a freewill offering. Meals will be delivered to your car. VINCENT Vincent Fire and Rescue drive-thru pulled pork dinner is 4 to 7 p.m. SATURDAY at the Vincent Fire Station. The menu will be two pulled pork sandwiches, cheesy potatoes, baked beans and drink for $10 per person. Children age 5 and under are free. Snow date is March 6. EMMETSBURG The Emmetsburg Music Department presents “An Evening of Jazz” at 7 p.m. TODAY at the Emmetsburg High School auditorium. A freewill donation will be accepted. Proceeds will be used to fund the 2022 band and choir trip to New Orleans. Face masks and social distancing are required at this event in accordance with school district COVID-19 policies.
