Jessie Wong s two daughters bonded with their neighbor during the pandemic, giving them a chance to find some social time during a year when many people became more isolated because of quarantine and social distancing rules.

Andrea Maltese laughs as she remembers the build up to the pandemic. At the time, she just wanted to get it over with, and was sure it wouldn t last long. We re practicing on bringing the iPads home, they had this system set up in school. And I was just sort of thinking, OK, let s call it now. Let s just start shutting down, get ahead of this, and it ll probably just be a couple weeks, things will return to normal, she said.

For many there, the estimated 336 people who died of an overdose in 2020 are not numbers but friends, relatives and neighbours. The operation of such sites can be the difference between of life and death.
âI know for a fact if I had a safe place to go, I wouldnât be so ashamed of my addiction. And I wouldnât be out using by myself, using dangerously,â Cardinal said.

“You sweaty pig! Put a mask on!” I heard those words during a Tuesday morning run in my neighborhood in Altadena, California. With my mask already on, I moved farther away from a white woman walking a dog.
Yet she did not stop. “You’re disgusting! Get the f - out of my street!”
I was already on the other side of the street, with a full mask on, while two other white women walked by without masks.
