Lasagna with love

Beacon Falls church joins national movement BEACON FALLS With the efficiency of an assembly line, seven volunteers Feb. 9 made tray after tray of lasagna or as they put it the “ultimate comfort food” in the kitchen at Beacon Falls Congregational Church. The lasagnas were destined for the tables of Beacon Falls residents who need a little comfort during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the national Lasagna Love project. “It’s just about bringing love and hope to the community through food,” said parishioner and volunteer Joann Overby, who coordinates the church’s Lasagna Love efforts. Lasagna Love is a nationwide grassroots movement that aims to positively impact communities by connecting neighbors with neighbors through homemade meal delivery, the project’s website states.

Region 16 board debates how to handle surplus

By Elio Gugliotti, Editor PROSPECT — Region 16 Board of Education members Feb. 10 debated whether to transfer any more surplus funds to its capital nonrecurring account, but took no action. The school board, which oversees public schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, finished the 2019-20 fiscal year with a budget surplus of $661,286. Excess school money is returned to the towns in the form of credits on their education payments to the region. The money is divided based on the percentage of students from each town. For the 2019-20 school year, 63.25% of students lived in Prospect and 36.75% in Beacon Falls. If $661,286 is returned, Prospect and Beacon Falls would be credited about $418,000 and $243,000, respectively, this fiscal year.

Prospect s grand list up 3% | Citizen s News

PROSPECT — The town’s 2020 net grand list increased 3% from 2019. A municipality’s net grand list is a tabulation of the assessed taxable values of real estate, personal property and motor vehicles. The 2020 grand list is $896.6 million, an increase of nearly $24.3 million from 2019. “I think it shows that the town is, in fact, doing very well,” Mayor Robert Chatfield said about the growth. An increase in real estate values drove the overall grand list growth. The assessed value of real estate increased by about $17.9 million, or 2%, to $766 million. Assessor Betsy Quist attributed the increase mostly to a recently completed property revaluation. She said a breakdown of the impact of revaluation on specific types of properties, like single-family homes, wasn’t available.

Region 16 opts to maintain status quo for schedule

By Elio Gugliotti, Editor PROSPECT Region 16 elementary and middle school students won’t be returning to in-person classes five days a week in the immediate future. The Region 16 Board of Education, which oversees public schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, opted Feb. 10 to maintain the status quo when it comes to the hybrid schedule for the elementary and middle schools. Elementary and middle school students now attend school in-person every weekday except Wednesdays, which are typically virtual learning days for all students in the region so staff can clean the schools. Students also have the option to remote learn at home full time.
