After a landslide victory in recent national elections, what El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly (AL) did in its first act after being sworn in on May 1, was seizing the control of top court with voting to oust and replace the judges and its Attorney General Raúl Melara of the country’s incumbent Constitutional Court (CC). President Nayib Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas (NI) party with the support of its ally, holding 64 out of 84 AL deputies, voted in favour of the motion, which is a clear manifestation of the AL’s new super majority that can now headway its legislative agenda without relying for support from other opposition parties.
