Inmate firefighter steals firetruck, goes on joyride

SACRAMENTO, Calif. A California inmate firefighter left “half a block of destruction” when he stole a firetruck in an apparent Independence Day escape bid and later tried to carjack a second vehicle, officials said Monday. The 31-year-old inmate from Orange County was part of an inmate crew fighting a vegetation fire caused by illegal fireworks late Sunday in the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Shingle Springs east of Sacramento, said California’s corrections and firefighting agencies, which jointly oversee the inmate firefighters. The inmate stole a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection all-wheel-drive wildland firefighting engine designed to carry four firefighters, in what California Highway Patrol Sgt. Dave Varao called an escape attempt.

The inmate firefighter was assigned to the Growlersburg Camp when he allegedly stole the fire engine, investigators said. The joyride, which happened Sunday, July 4, within the CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit, caused significant damage to the fire engine, as well as public and private property in the area.

The El Dorado County Sheriff s Office said a registered sex offender cut off his GPS monitor and later walked onto a high school campus while students ate lunch. Nolan Simmons, 41, was arrested on charges of being a registered sex offender on school grounds without permission and parole hold. Deputies said Simmons walked onto the campus of Ponderosa High School on Wednesday and sat in the vicinity of students while they were eating their lunch. He allegedly cut off his GPS monitor the day prior and had a warrant for his arrest.
